No, Oprah Winfrey didn’t say she’s leaving the United States before inauguration day

Media icon Oprah Winfrey recently made headlines for endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee in the 2024 presidential election.

However, despite widespread online claims, there is no truth to the assertion

that Winfrey vowed to leave the United States following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.

False Claims Circulate Online

A viral Facebook post dated January 12 suggested that Winfrey planned to leave the country before Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

The post, which featured images of both Trump and Winfrey, quoted the media mogul as allegedly stating, “I can’t live here for the next four years.”

The claim quickly gained traction, leading to speculation about Winfrey’s future plans.

The post also asserted that Winfrey had decided to step away from her long-running career in media, including quitting any active talk shows she may have been involved in. However, neither the original post nor the blog article it linked to provided any credible sources to support these claims.

No Evidence to Support the Rumors

Upon further investigation, there is no verifiable evidence—such as statements from Winfrey, social media posts, or credible news reports—suggesting that she plans to leave the United States due to Trump’s re-election. In fact, her production company has not made any announcements regarding her relocation or retirement.

Winfrey’s long-running and highly successful Oprah Winfrey Show ended in 2011 after 25 seasons, marking the conclusion of one of television’s most iconic programs. However, she has remained active in the media world, hosting various shows and podcasts over the years. Most recently, The Oprah Podcast featured an interview with outgoing U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, demonstrating her continued involvement in meaningful discussions on public health and social issues.

Social Media Misinformation

The Facebook post was flagged as part of an ongoing effort by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, to combat misinformation. Given the post’s lack of credible sources and the absence of any supporting statements from Winfrey herself, the claim was deemed false.

Online misinformation often spreads quickly, especially following major political events like a presidential election. In this case, the fabricated story may have been fueled by Winfrey’s past political endorsements, as she has been vocal about her support for Democratic candidates. However, despite her political stance, there is no indication that she has ever suggested leaving the country due to election outcomes.

Winfrey’s Political Influence and Continued Media Presence

Throughout her career, Oprah Winfrey has been a prominent figure in both media and politics. She famously endorsed Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign and has since voiced support for Democratic leaders, including Kamala Harris.

Her endorsement of Harris in the 2024 election was widely discussed, as it reinforced her continued engagement in political discourse. However, while Winfrey has been outspoken about her views, she has never made any statements suggesting she would leave the United States due to a political shift.

Furthermore, Winfrey remains a key figure in the entertainment and media industries, with ongoing projects and initiatives that continue to impact audiences worldwide. Whether through television specials, podcast episodes, or philanthropic efforts, she remains an influential voice in American culture.

Conclusion

Despite viral claims circulating online, there is no truth to the rumor that Oprah Winfrey plans to leave the United States following Donald Trump’s re-election. The claim, which originated from an unverified Facebook post, lacks any credible evidence and has been debunked as false.

Winfrey remains an active force in media and public life, and while she has been politically vocal, there is no indication that she intends to abandon her home country based on election results. As misinformation continues to spread, it’s crucial to rely on verified sources and factual reporting before believing or sharing such claims.
