Piers Morgan returns to GMB four years after exit as Susanna Reid tells him ‘I don’t want a hug’

After a dramatic departure from Good Morning Britain (GMB) in 2021, Piers Morgan made a highly anticipated return to the ITV breakfast show on Monday (March 3).

His reappearance, however, was not without its awkward moments—particularly with his former co-host Susanna Reid,

who was not exactly eager to welcome him back with open arms.

Piers Morgan’s GMB Comeback

The outspoken journalist and television personality last appeared on GMB four years ago, when he famously stormed off set following a heated discussion about Meghan Markle.

His return to the studio marked the end of a long absence, and he wasted no time in pointing it out.

As he was introduced by co-host Ed Balls, Piers made sure to remind everyone just how long it had been since his departure.

“Hang on! Are we just going to ignore the fact that I haven’t been here for 1,453 days?” he quipped, making a grand entrance in his signature style.

Awkward Exchange Between Piers and Susanna

While Piers seemed eager to step back into familiar territory, his reunion with Susanna Reid quickly turned into an uncomfortable moment. As he edged closer to her on the sofa, he jokingly asked, “Am I not even going to get a hug?”

Susanna, however, was far from enthusiastic. She bluntly replied, “No, I don’t want a hug.” The exchange created an air of tension, but after some hesitation, she reluctantly agreed to a brief and awkward embrace—one that barely went beyond a mutual clutch of forearms.

Afterward, Susanna clarified, “I’m not a hugger,” while Ed Balls, in contrast, welcomed Piers with a more relaxed and open attitude.

Piers’ Take on Donald Trump

Beyond the tense reunion, Piers was brought onto the show to discuss US politics, particularly his insights into former President Donald Trump. With last week’s White House controversy involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy making headlines, Piers shared his thoughts on Trump’s handling of international relations.

Morgan, who has had multiple interactions with Trump over the years, delved into the former president’s approach, offering his perspective on how Trump’s leadership style continues to shape global politics. But while the discussion was meant to be the focal point of his return, much of the attention remained on his on-air dynamic with Susanna.

Mixed Reactions from Viewers

Piers’ return to Good Morning Britain sparked strong reactions from viewers, with opinions divided on whether his comeback was a welcome one.

Many fans took to social media to express their excitement at seeing him back on the show, while others felt he should not have returned at all.

One unimpressed viewer remarked, “Piers still loves himself and loves telling us so.” Another person referenced his past fallout with weatherman Alex Beresford, joking, “Morgan would only come in if the weatherman wasn’t in.”

Even some of Piers’ past supporters were skeptical about his return. One viewer argued, “He shouldn’t have gone back on there after the way they treated him.”

Others, however, were quick to turn their criticism toward Susanna Reid. One social media user wrote, “How rude is Susanna with Piers? She’s such a bitter old woman. Becoming very dislikable.” Another called for Piers to return permanently, writing, “Bring him back! He’s the only reason I used to watch. GMB has now turned into The Muppet Show, like watching paint dry.”

Will Piers Make Another Appearance?

While his return to Good Morning Britain was brief, Piers Morgan certainly made an impact—whether good or bad, depending on whom you ask. Given his ability to stir up debate and spark conversations, it remains to be seen whether ITV will invite him back for future appearances.

For now, his return has left viewers with plenty to talk about, and one thing is certain: Piers Morgan knows how to make an entrance—even if not everyone is thrilled to see him again.
