Richard Hammond acknowledges his ‘hideous traits’ and claims being a male TV presenter is ‘catastrophic for mental health’ – as he steps out with his wedding ring still on after marriage split

Richard Hammond, best known as a former Top Gear presenter, has opened up about the challenges of his career and its impact on his mental health.

Speaking candidly on the podcast Who We Are Now, which he co-hosts with his daughter Izzy, Hammond described the toll his role as a television presenter has taken on him.

This revelation comes amid personal upheaval for the 55-year-old,

who recently announced his separation from Mindy Hammond, his wife of 28 years.

The Podcast Revelation

In a recent episode of Who We Are Now, Hammond sat down with his daughter and guest Steve Jones, the Welsh presenter and former model.

During their conversation, Hammond reflected on the pressures of being a male television presenter, describing it as “catastrophic for mental health.”

“As a bloke, keeping your head straight and managing your mental fitness is tough,” he admitted. “Being a television presenter, especially a male one, is catastrophic.”

Hammond revealed that his career has often rewarded traits he now views as problematic. “For 36 years, my male ego has been encouraged and rewarded for some of the worst traits we can exhibit. I’ve been made to feel that what I’m about to say is compelling enough to hold the attention of millions and that my questions are always pertinent. It can be hideous.”

A Career Built on Ego

Hammond acknowledged that the nature of his work has shaped his personality in ways he finds troubling. “I’ve been encouraged to show off, to believe in my own importance. It’s not a healthy way to live, and it doesn’t always leave room for self-reflection or balance.”

Though his comments carried a self-deprecating tone, they also highlighted the emotional challenges of life in the public eye. Hammond joked, “I’m perfect, of course—completely balanced and happy,” before slipping into a wheezy voice to add, “Well, maybe not.”

Personal Struggles and Public Pressure

Hammond’s reflections come during a period of significant personal change. Less than two weeks ago, he confirmed his separation from Mindy, with whom he shares two daughters, Isabella, 24, and Willow, 22.

Reports suggest Hammond had been living in a converted barn on the family property in Herefordshire since August 2023, attempting to salvage the relationship. However, the couple ultimately decided to part ways.

Speaking about the separation, Hammond said, “Our marriage is coming to an end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters. This Christmas, we were together as a family, and though things will be structured differently moving forward, we’ll always remain a family.”

A Playful Exchange on the Podcast

During the podcast, Hammond also touched on insecurities and comparisons in the entertainment industry. He humorously noted the differences between himself and guest Steve Jones, whose career began in modeling.

“I remember when I first saw Steve on TV,” Hammond shared. “I thought, ‘Oh, bugger, look at him—he’s the Welsh hunk.’ Nobody has ever called me ‘Brummy hunk Richard Hammond.’”

He continued to joke about their differences, saying, “If I were an alien seeing the two of us, I’d think, ‘Those are two completely different species.’”

Izzy, Hammond’s daughter, chimed in with concern: “Are you okay? Do you want to talk about it? You’re really revealing some stuff here.”

Reflections and Moving Forward

Hammond’s comments provide a glimpse into the emotional complexities of his high-profile career. His acknowledgment of his “hideous traits” and the toll of television fame underscores the challenges of maintaining mental health in an industry that often rewards ego-driven behavior.

As he navigates this new chapter of his life, both personally and professionally, Hammond’s openness serves as a reminder of the importance of self-awareness and adaptability. Despite the challenges, his humor and candid reflections highlight his resilience and willingness to confront the difficulties head-on.

With his focus on family and an honest exploration of his experiences, Hammond is moving forward with a renewed sense of perspective.
