Richard Hammond dreams of getting banned from Jeremy Clarkson’s pub

Richard Hammond has revealed that he’s set on one goal when he finally visits his friend Jeremy Clarkson’s £1 million pub—getting banned.

The cheeky remark is typical of the camaraderie shared between Hammond and Clarkson, who have been working together for decades.

Their friendship, rooted in their time co-presenting *Top Gear* and later *The Grand Tour*, has been the foundation for many lighthearted moments both on and off-screen.

Now, Hammond is adding a bit of humor to the mix, hinting that he plans to get on Clarkson’s bad side when he visits his much-discussed pub, *The Farmer’s Dog*.

The two first teamed up in 2002 on the BBC’s *Top Gear*,

where their undeniable on-screen chemistry and shared enthusiasm for cars made them one of television’s most beloved presenting teams.

That partnership continued well beyond *Top Gear*, as the trio moved to Amazon Prime in 2015 with *The Grand Tour*, which has also enjoyed tremendous success. In that time, their pranks, inside jokes, and playful banter have kept their relationship entertaining for viewers—and it’s clear that the banter continues behind the scenes, too.

During an appearance on *The Chris Moyles Show* on Radio X, Hammond was asked about the chance to visit Clarkson’s pub, which opened with much fanfare following the success of Clarkson’s show *Clarkson’s Farm*. Hammond humorously admitted he hadn’t been to *The Farmer’s Dog* yet, but that when he does, he has one simple mission: to get banned. “No, I haven’t been yet. I want to go and get banned. So I’ve got to summon the energy to do that. I don’t think it’ll be that difficult. I think he’s already banned James,” Hammond joked.

James May, the third member of the trio, has already experienced this fate. According to Hammond, May was banned from Clarkson’s pub right from its opening day. This comes as no surprise given the often playful, yet mischievous, relationship the three share. It seems Clarkson’s pub has become a place where his close friends are frequently tested in humorous ways. Hammond’s statement has fueled the ongoing lighthearted rivalry between the trio, a dynamic that fans of their shows have long enjoyed.

Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, *The Farmer’s Dog*, became widely popular after its feature on *Clarkson’s Farm*, where Clarkson documented his attempt to run the farm and manage the pub as part of his rural lifestyle experiment. The show’s success, combined with Clarkson’s large fan base, quickly turned the pub into a hotspot for visitors looking to experience the charm of the man himself.

When questioned about his visit to James May’s pub, *The Royal Oak* in Swallowcliffe, Hammond revealed he had paid for his own drink there. While May, Clarkson, and Hammond have shared many iconic moments over the years, there have also been professional bumps along the way—none more notable than their dramatic departure from *Top Gear* in 2015. The trio left after Clarkson was involved in a well-publicized altercation with producer Oisin Tymon, which led to Clarkson’s dismissal from the BBC.

While Hammond and May eventually followed Clarkson to *The Grand Tour* on Amazon Prime, James May shared his thoughts on the incident years later in an interview with *The Times*. Reflecting on their departure from *Top Gear*, May suggested that the situation could have been handled differently. “I thought it was very unfortunate and I don’t actually think our *Top Gear* had to end because of it,” he said. “I think it could have been patched up and put down to a bit of high stress and flightiness, to be honest.”

Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, the trio’s bond remains strong. Their shared history and work together continue to resonate with fans, who have followed them from *Top Gear* to *The Grand Tour*, and now, even to their personal ventures like Clarkson’s pub. Whether it’s visiting pubs, causing playful mischief, or creating new shows, Hammond, Clarkson, and May show no signs of slowing down in their unique brand of entertainment.

As for Hammond, it seems the plan for the future is clear—when the time comes, he’ll head to Clarkson’s pub with one aim in mind: to be banned. Fans can only wait and see how the infamous pub rivalry continues to unfold.
