Robin Roberts has spent decades in the public eye, but her journey to living authentically was not without its challenges.

The longtime Good Morning America anchor came out as gay in 2013 and recently reflected on how difficult it was to reconcile her sexuality with her faith.
Now, after nearly two decades with her partner Amber Laign, the couple has officially tied the knot, marking a new chapter in their love story.
During a candid interview on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, Roberts, 63, opened up about her fears before coming out and the relief she felt once she embraced her truth.

She admitted that her biggest concern was how her revelation would affect her colleagues at GMA.

“It’s not the Robin Roberts Show; it’s Good Morning America,” she shared. “And there are so many people whose livelihoods depend on the success of our show.

I didn’t want to do anything to hurt those people who I’ve been working with and absolutely adore.”
Roberts had never hidden her relationship with Laign, but she hadn’t publicly addressed it either. Part of her hesitation, she revealed, stemmed from her Christian faith. “I was afraid that people would think you can’t be gay and a Christian. And I am. I was so fearful that I would be shunned,” she confessed. However, after she came out, Roberts received a heartfelt letter from the National Office of the Presbyterian Church offering full support. Looking back, she regrets the years she spent worrying unnecessarily.
Roberts and Laign, 48, have kept much of their relationship private since meeting on a blind date in 2005. However, their love has endured both joyful moments and immense challenges, including Laign’s battle with breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2021. Throughout their relationship, Roberts has also faced her own health struggles, including breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome. Their resilience and unwavering support for each other have strengthened their bond over the years.

While their romance has largely been free of public drama, Roberts admitted she once considered breaking up with Laign early in their relationship. Used to relationships filled with conflict, Roberts initially mistook the stability and ease of their connection as a lack of passion. One night, she attempted to break up with Laign, only to be met with an unexpected response.
“Robin, I know the relationship you had before. If that is what you want, knock yourself out,” Laign told her. Instead of pleading for Roberts to stay, Laign confidently let her know that she deserved better. That moment changed everything for Roberts. “I was stunned. I thought she would beg me to stay, and she did just the opposite,” she recalled. “She made me unlearn what I thought love was.”
Roberts and Laign’s love story reached a new milestone in September 2023 when they finally said “I do.” The couple tied the knot in an intimate backyard ceremony at their home in Farmington, Connecticut. Their wedding was meticulously planned, with an emphasis on sustainability and personal significance. Event planner JoAnn Gregoli and designer Jen Gould created a breathtaking setting, complete with Spanish moss to honor Roberts’ Southern roots and a Prosecco truck for guests to enjoy.

“They were in shock,” Gregoli said of the couple’s reaction to the setup. “Amber cried and said, ‘You took my vision and made my dreams come true.'”
The celebration was attended by 250 guests, including close friends and family. The reception featured thousands of flowers, hundreds of candles, and a 360-degree photo booth. Throughout the evening, the phrase “love wins” was prominently displayed, reflecting the couple’s journey and triumph over adversity.
Since their wedding, Roberts has expressed how much she loves married life. “We’ve been together almost 19 years as a couple, and we truly feel like newlyweds. I wish someone had told us earlier how great married life is,” she shared.
She also offered a positive update on Laign’s health, revealing that her partner is doing well and ready for the next stage of their journey together. “The cancer is at bay, she’s recovering well, and she’s excited for the future,” Roberts said.
Their love story is one of resilience, faith, and deep understanding. Despite the obstacles they have faced, Roberts and Laign have built a relationship grounded in unwavering support and unconditional love. As they move forward together, they continue to inspire others to live authentically and cherish the relationships that matter most.
