Saturday Kitchen’s Matt Tebbutt reveals how he truly feels going live on air on BBC Breakfast as it’s revealed he’s ‘in talks’ to replace Gregg Wallace on MasterChef

Matt Tebbutt, the beloved host of *Saturday Kitchen*, has opened up about his experience going live on air,

particularly his nervous moments when BBC Breakfast hosts check in with him.

The 51-year-old chef, who has been at the helm of *Saturday Kitchen* since 2016,

admitted that the most nerve-wracking part of his Saturday morning routine comes

just before his show begins, during his interactions with *BBC Breakfast* hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty.

Speaking to *The Express*, Matt revealed that when he’s thrown into the live broadcast with Charlie and Naga, he feels the most on edge and nervous.

“Honestly, the most on edge and the most nervous I am of the whole Saturday morning is when I get thrown to the lions in that newsroom,” he explained. He shared that being put on the spot with questions and banter from the *BBC Breakfast* hosts can be both thrilling and challenging. “You’ve just got to sort of fend them off and come back with something, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t,” Matt added.

Despite the nerves, Matt has a deep admiration for Naga’s sharp wit and her playful, spontaneous approach to live broadcasting. He described Naga’s sense of humor as “a bit like the old school ground stuff” where she prods people to provoke reactions. He explained, “She is as sharp as a razor and you do not know where it’s going to come from next,” highlighting how unpredictable and entertaining her on-air banter can be. Matt also acknowledged that Naga and Charlie’s unpredictability can throw off even the most seasoned broadcasters, saying that one moment, they might be discussing serious news, and the next, a curveball would come out of nowhere. He admitted, “As much as I dread it, I love it as well.”

In addition to his work on *Saturday Kitchen*, Matt has hosted several other well-known cooking programs, including *Food Unwrapped*, *Market Kitchen*, and *Great British Food Revival*. His charisma and easy-going personality have made him a favorite among viewers, and his ability to bring fresh energy to cooking shows has earned him a loyal following.

Now, Matt is reportedly in talks to take over from Gregg Wallace as a presenter on *MasterChef*. This comes after the 60-year-old Gregg stepped back from the show following allegations of inappropriate behavior, which are still under investigation. Matt’s potential involvement in *MasterChef* would add another high-profile show to his already impressive portfolio.

Since Gregg’s departure from *MasterChef* in 2024, speculation about who would replace him has been rife. In January, food critic Grace Dent was announced as the new presenter for the celebrity version of *MasterChef*, following Gregg’s exit. Grace, known for her sharp critiques on *MasterChef* and *MasterChef: The Professionals*, has been filming the celebrity series alongside veteran host John Torode. However, it remains unclear whether Grace will take on the role for the main *MasterChef* series, as there are still unanswered questions regarding the ongoing investigation into Gregg’s conduct.

A source close to the show told *The Sun* that Matt Tebbutt has proven himself capable of stepping into a big role, especially after successfully taking over *Saturday Kitchen* from James Martin, another popular TV chef. The source noted, “He managed the feat of making it his own and almost making viewers forget who his predecessor was.” With this in mind, show producers and BBC bosses are reportedly hoping that Matt can replicate this success if he joins *MasterChef*, as the show has a massive following and is one of the network’s flagship programs.

While nothing has been finalized yet, the buzz around Matt’s potential role on *MasterChef* is certainly building. As the investigation into Gregg Wallace continues, the BBC is keen to have everything in place to ensure the show moves forward smoothly. For now, fans of Matt Tebbutt can continue enjoying his witty, engaging presence on *Saturday Kitchen* as they eagerly await news of his next big step in the culinary TV world.
