Savannah Guthrie’s God’s Honest Truth: How the ‘Unlikely’ Anchor Became the Today Show’s Heart — and Soul

Savannah Guthrie has long been a comforting presence for millions of Americans who wake up to watch her on Today.

Her warmth, intelligence, and charm have solidified her place as the heart and soul of the morning show.

But beyond the studio, Guthrie has been on a personal journey of faith and self-discovery—one that she’s now sharing with the world through her latest book.

In an exclusive conversation, the 53-year-old anchor opened up about her new children’s book, Mostly What God Does Is Love You,

which is a follow-up to her previous bestseller, Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere.

The deeply personal book is a testament to her faith, her upbringing, and her desire to instill those same values in her own children.

Faith as a Foundation

For Guthrie, faith has always been an integral part of life. Growing up, her sister once described God as “the sixth member of our family”, reflecting just how deeply their spiritual beliefs shaped their lives. Now, as a mother to 10-year-old Vale and 8-year-old Charley—who was named after her late father—she hopes to pass on those same values.

“We have lots of conversations,” she shared. “My kids have good brains, and they’re not afraid to ask tough questions.”

As a journalist known for asking tough questions herself—whether to world leaders or Hollywood stars—it seems that curiosity runs in the family. Guthrie embraces those discussions with her children, knowing that their spiritual journeys will ultimately be their own.

“They’re little now, but as they get older, it’ll be up to them whether they choose this relationship,” she explained. “My job is to introduce God, and God will take it from there.”

A Tattoo with a Special Meaning

Guthrie’s deep connection to her father, who passed away when she was a teenager, is forever etched on her skin—literally. On her right forearm, she carries her father’s handwriting with the words “all my love” inked as her first and only tattoo.

Those words, she says, continue to guide her life, her family, and now, her writing.

Overcoming Fears to Share Her Story

Despite her confidence in front of the camera, Guthrie admitted that opening up about her faith in such a public way was a daunting experience.

“I was so afraid because I didn’t really know how it would be received,” she confessed. “What I’ve learned is that there’s a real yearning for deep conversation about things that matter.”

The response to her first book reassured her that she wasn’t alone in these thoughts. Readers—regardless of their personal beliefs—connected with her reflections, proving that authenticity and vulnerability can create meaningful dialogue.

Two of her biggest cheerleaders through this journey have been her mother, Nancy, and her longtime co-host-turned-lifelong friend, Hoda Kotb.

A Friendship Rooted in Support

Hoda Kotb, who recently departed from Today, played an instrumental role in encouraging Guthrie to write the book.

“That’s just Hoda,” Guthrie said with a smile, recalling how Kotb eagerly asked for pages to read before she even knew if her words would turn into a full book.

Their friendship has been a constant source of support, with Guthrie always there for Kotb and vice versa. When Kotb announced her departure from Today, Guthrie made sure to give her a heartfelt send-off, gifting her sentimental items that carried deep meaning.

A Mother’s Encouragement

Guthrie also credits her mother for helping her overcome initial doubts about publishing such a personal book. At first, her mother was hesitant—not because she doubted her daughter’s ability, but because she worried about the vulnerability that came with sharing such personal reflections.

“I think she was afraid for me to put myself out there,” Guthrie admitted. “It made me afraid, too. But she encouraged me, and that was a moment of growth for both of us.”

Now, her mother has fully embraced the book and enjoys discussing its themes, making it a shared journey of faith and understanding.

More Than Just a News Anchor

Guthrie’s career has taken her from covering politics to chatting with Hollywood’s biggest stars. She’s interviewed presidents, shared laughs with Tom Hanks, and even engaged in friendly banter with athletes like Jalen Hurts.

But at her core, she’s a storyteller—whether that’s delivering the news, writing about her faith, or answering her children’s never-ending stream of questions.

Her new book is not just a lesson for kids but a message that resonates with people of all ages: love, faith, and meaningful conversations are what truly matter.

As she continues her journey on Today and beyond, one thing remains clear—Savannah Guthrie is more than just a television anchor. She’s a woman of faith, a devoted mother, a loving friend, and an inspiration to those who start their mornings with her, both on-screen and now, through the pages of her book.
