Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to comedy, especially with her husband, Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, frequently cracking jokes at home and on-screen.

However, during a Weekend Update segment in December, Jost delivered a joke so shocking that even Johansson,
who had been warned in advance, couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
In a recent profile interview, the actress, 40, opened up about her reaction to the controversial joke Jost, 42,

made during SNL’s annual joke swap with co-host Michael Che, 41.

A Joke That Crossed the Line

Johansson admitted she had been given a heads-up that Jost would be delivering a joke related to her, specifically a “vagina joke” written by Che. But even with that knowledge, she had no idea how far it would go.
“I just can’t believe that they went there,” she confessed. “It was so vulgar. It was so gross. It was really gross. And, like, old-school gross.”
The actress recalled that when she first heard there would be a joke about her, she thought, “It’s a vagina joke, how bad could it be?” But the moment the now-infamous Costco photo appeared on-screen, she immediately realized what was coming.
“As soon as the Costco photo came up, I was like, ‘No! No, Michael!'” she said, remembering the moment with a mix of horror and amusement.

Cameras Captured Her Real-Time Reaction
Adding to the intensity of the moment was the fact that Johansson’s reaction was being recorded live for television. She explained that being caught off guard in front of an audience made the experience even more overwhelming.
“They were waiting for me to react. I felt insane,” she said. “The fact that it took on a full To Catch a Predator-style reveal or whatever … All of a sudden, it was like a whole bunch of people holding up lights, and a guy with a video camera.”
Having spent the entire day at 30 Rock, Johansson said she was already exhausted and feeling lightheaded, making the surprise even more intense.

Colin Jost’s Side of the Story
Jost later addressed the joke during an interview with Jimmy Fallon in January, revealing that Johansson was “genuinely so shocked” by what unfolded.
“I’m in trouble, I think, with a lot of people,” Jost joked about the fallout from the moment.
He recalled how Johansson had been asked beforehand if she was okay with a joke about her, to which she casually agreed.

“They were like, ‘Hey, would you be okay if Michael made a little, like, kind of vagina joke at some point?’” Jost recounted. “She was like, ‘Sure, whatever, I’m open to it.’ I didn’t know where it was going.”
Even Jost, who has spent years in comedy, seemed unprepared for the full extent of the joke.
“I can’t act that well,” he admitted, explaining that his reaction on-air was completely authentic.

A Moment to Remember
Though Johansson was initially shocked, the couple, who share a 3-year-old son named Cosmo, have proven time and time again that they can laugh at even the most unexpected situations. While this particular joke may have gone further than she expected, it’s clear that Johansson and Jost have a relationship built on humor—no matter how outrageous the punchline might be.
