Selena Gomez has candidly admitted lupus treatment causes weight fluctuations as fans notice slimmer frame at SAG Awards

Selena Gomez has never shied away from discussing the impact of her lupus diagnosis on her health, including the way her treatment affects her weight.

As fans pointed out her noticeably slimmer figure at the 2025 SAG Awards, a past video resurfaced

in which the singer and actress candidly addressed her body changes due to medication.

Lupus Treatment and Weight Fluctuations

Gomez, 32, has been open about her health struggles, revealing that the medications she takes to manage lupus—

a chronic autoimmune disease—cause her weight to fluctuate.

In a resurfaced TikTok video from February 2023, the Emilia Pérez star explained how her body responds to treatment.

“When I’m taking [the medicine], I tend to hold a lot of water weight, and that happens very normally,” she shared at the time. “And then when I’m off of it, I tend to kind of lose weight.”

Her comments were a response to ongoing discussions about her body, as she has faced criticism and speculation over her appearance throughout her career.

During a 2023 episode of the Apple TV+ series Dear…, Gomez spoke further about the toll the scrutiny took on her.

“My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications,” she explained. “And obviously, people just ran with it. It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus.”

SAG Awards Appearance Sparks New Speculation

At the 2025 SAG Awards, held in Los Angeles, Gomez turned heads in a stunning navy blue off-the-shoulder Celine gown paired with elegant strappy sandals. While many praised her look, social media quickly erupted with comments about her noticeably slimmer figure.

Some online users speculated about the reasons behind her weight loss, with a handful suggesting she may have used Ozempic—a Type II diabetes drug that has gained popularity in Hollywood for its weight loss effects.

“Ozempic and plastic surgery are saving her career,” one user claimed on X (formerly Twitter).

“She must be on the Ozempic bandwagon,” another wrote.

“She’s on that Ozempicccc 😂,” added a third.

Despite the widespread speculation, there has been no confirmation from Gomez regarding these claims. Page Six reached out to her representatives for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Gomez’s SAG Awards Victory and Acceptance Speech

Despite the chatter about her appearance, Gomez had a triumphant night at the SAG Awards. She and her Only Murders in the Building co-stars took home the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

During her acceptance speech, Gomez humorously acknowledged the absence of her co-stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short.

“Wait, we never win. This is so weird,” she said while holding the award.

She then playfully joked, “Well, Marty and Steve aren’t here because, you know, they don’t really care.”

Gomez went on to express her gratitude, saying, “Thank you to Marty and Steve for helping raise me. I genuinely am just so grateful to everybody—the writers, the entire team. Everyone deserves this, and I take it home for all of us.”

Standing Strong Amid Criticism

This isn’t the first time Gomez has faced public scrutiny over her weight and appearance. Over the years, she has repeatedly emphasized that her body changes are a natural result of managing her health condition.

Her candidness about living with lupus has been praised by fans who appreciate her transparency in an industry where physical appearance is constantly under the spotlight.

Though critics continue to speculate, Gomez remains focused on her career, using her platform to advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance.

With another major award added to her growing list of achievements, the singer and actress is proving that her talent, resilience, and authenticity continue to define her legacy far beyond any discussions about her weight.
