Sheinelle Jones brought plenty of laughter to The Today Show when she caught her co-hosts off guard with an unexpected question during the 3rd Hour.
The veteran anchor was interviewing singer Khalid about his latest album, Sincere, and his decision to incorporate rap into his music.
While discussing his evolving sound, Sheinelle took the conversation in a playful direction by trying to determine what Khalid’s rap voice would be.
Her approach left her Today colleagues both amused and puzzled.
Sheinelle’s Unforgettable Question to Khalid
During the interview, Sheinelle turned to Khalid and said, “I’m looking at you and trying to figure out what your rap voice would be.”
The unexpected remark quickly drew laughter from the studio.
She then took things a step further by offering her own examples of rap styles, mumbling a slow and steady tone before switching to a faster, more energetic delivery reminiscent of Boom Bap rap. Her impromptu performance left Khalid clapping and laughing, clearly enjoying the fun exchange.
However, her co-hosts—Al Roker, Craig Melvin, and Dylan Dreyer—seemed more bewildered than anything.
Al Roker, looking slightly baffled, turned to Sheinelle and jokingly asked, “What is happening in your head right now?”
Dylan Dreyer chimed in, “What’s Sheinelle’s rap voice?” adding to the studio’s hilarity.
Doubling down on her question, Sheinelle continued, “Is it more DMX-y?” referencing the gritty, aggressive style of the late rapper DMX. “Or is it smooth?” she mused.
Khalid, clearly understanding where she was going with this, responded thoughtfully, “I’m more of a conscious rap type of guy.” He went on to compare his rap style to that of Common, the acclaimed Chicago rapper known for his introspective and poetic lyrics.
Sheinelle’s Busy Life Beyond ‘Today’
While Sheinelle keeps Today’s 3rd Hour lively with her humor and spontaneity, she also has a fulfilling life outside of work. In addition to her hosting duties, she is a devoted mother of three.
Recently, she took to Instagram to celebrate a milestone in her eldest son Kayin’s life—his 15th birthday.
A Heartfelt Tribute to Her Son
Marking the special occasion, Sheinelle shared a nostalgic baby photo of Kayin along with a touching caption.
“15 years ago today … my heart expanded with so much love—I can’t even describe it,” she wrote, expressing the deep emotions that come with watching her child grow.
She also shared a sweet detail from Kayin’s early years, mentioning how she used to play Celine Dion’s cover of John Lennon’s Beautiful Boy when he was a baby.
“Now, you’re heading to high school! Goodness, time is flying … HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!” she added, reflecting on how quickly the years have passed.
Kayin’s Graduation and Big Next Step
Sheinelle has been vocal about her pride in her children, often sharing snippets of their achievements and growth. Just weeks before celebrating Kayin’s birthday, she posted a heartfelt tribute to him for another big milestone—his graduation from eighth grade.
Sharing a video montage of photos from the special day, she reminisced about the very first time she dropped him off at pre-kindergarten.
“I remember your first day of pre-K like it was yesterday!” she wrote. “You were this giant light, ready to soak up everything they could teach you.”
Now, as he prepares to enter high school, Sheinelle is taking in every moment of this transition.
