As a mother of two young children, RZA, two years old, and Riot, ten months old, Rihanna revealed that she was unprepared for this side effect of motherhood. 

She humorously remarked that she didn’t realize hair loss was “on the pamphlet” of pregnancy and childbirth side effects.

Rihanna explained that her hair loss occurred in waves, a pattern she hadn’t anticipated. She thought it would be a one-time event, after which her hair would grow back. Instead, she experienced patchy hair loss, which prompted her to embrace creativity with her hairstyles. From high ponytails to long curls and honey-blonde bangs, she adapted and made the best of her situation.

In a bold move, Rihanna has also started showcasing her natural curls, stepping away from wigs and presenting her real hair during recent public appearances for her Fenty Hair line. This embrace of her natural beauty serves as an inspiring message to many women experiencing similar issues.

Postpartum hair loss is a natural, albeit frustrating, part of the postpartum experience. During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen alter the hair growth cycle. Typically, hair grows in three phases: the growing phase (anagen), the transitional phase (catagen), and the resting phase (telogen). Under normal circumstances, most hair strands are in the anagen phase, growing for two to four years.

Dr. Kavita Gulati, Dermatologist Consultant at Sahara Hospital, Lucknow, explained that because of childbirth, the body tries to adjust itself according to the situation and thus has a few symptoms as side effects. Postpartum hair fall is one such side-effect of low levels of estrogen in the body that makes follicles enter a declining phase. This shift results in a significant amount of hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium, which can be startling as it far exceeds the usual 100 hairs lost per day.

The good news is that postpartum hair loss is temporary. Typically, hair growth patterns return to normal within a year after giving birth. By the time your baby is around one year old, your hair should regain its usual fullness. If the hair loss persists beyond this period or continues to worsen, it might be worth consulting a doctor to rule out other underlying conditions, such as thyroid issues or anaemia.

While postpartum hair loss cannot be prevented, there are ways to manage and mitigate its impact. Here are some practical tips to help you through this phase:

Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support hair health. Ensure your diet includes plenty of iron, zinc, and vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for healthy hair growth.

Be gentle with your hair to avoid unnecessary breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle and avoid hairstyles that pull on the hair. Opt for mild shampoos and conditioners that do not weigh down your hair.

Volumizing shampoos and conditioners can make your hair appear fuller. Avoid heavy products that can make hair look limp and lifeless. Instead, choose lightweight styling products that add body and lift to your hair.

Take a cue from Rihanna and get creative with your hairstyles. A fresh haircut can make a big difference in how your hair looks and feels. Layers, bangs, and strategic colouring can give the illusion of volume and thickness. Consult your stylist for personalized advice and techniques that work best for your hair type.

Finally, embrace the changes and remember that postpartum hair loss is a normal part of motherhood. Confidence and self-acceptance can go a long way in how you feel about your appearance.
