Asher HaVon wowed the judges – and audience – in a tremendous run this season, belting out a variety pop and soul ballads.
He sealed his triumph Tuesday night when the musical judges made his victory official.
HaVon began his season 25 run by earning a three-chair turn during the blind auditions with his rendition of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain.”
He joined Reba McEntire’s team, who described his final round performance by saying, “For you to get up there and sing like you did.
Using your God-gifted talent that God was so sweet to give you makes me so proud and happy. You’re so regal when you’re singing and you carry it so well.”
The coach and contestant performed a duet of Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald’s “On My Own” during the finale.
HaVon, 31, was born in Selma with a gospel music backdrop. He says he has been signing his whole life, crediting his mother, JoAnne Smith, and an elementary school teacher with encouraging him from an early age.
He gained wider attention in 2015 when he led the choir that performed for former President Barack Obama at the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march.
HaVon’s hometown, including his mother, gathered to watch his final week’s victories. HaVon has been openly grateful for the encouragement throughout the season, saying, “I feel like I’m standing on the shoulders of so many people that are really praying for me. I can feel it. I can feel the well wishes and it means the world.”
Selma Mayor James Perkins also joined in on the kudos, sending a statement after the win that said, “We are extremely proud of Asher, and we look forward to receiving you back in Selma to celebrate your success. Job well done. Selma is proud.”
