Stephen Mulhern on ‘feud’ with Ben Shephard: ‘We might have a rivalry now’

Stephen Mulhern has built an impressive career as one of ITV’s most beloved presenters, charming audiences with his humor and quick wit.

Over the years, he has hosted a variety of popular game shows, including Catchphrase, In for a Penny, and Deal or No Deal.

However, in 2020, Mulhern fronted Rolling In It, a high-energy game show that he declared as one of the best on television.

During its run, he jokingly compared it to Ben Shephard’s long-running game show, Tipping Point, sparking playful talk of a friendly rivalry.

Stephen’s Lighthearted ‘Swipe’ at Ben Shephard

From 2020 to 2021, Mulhern hosted Rolling In It, a game show where contestants, alongside celebrity partners,

attempted to roll coins down a moving conveyor belt to win cash prizes. The unique format quickly gained popularity, and Mulhern became particularly enthusiastic about its success.

In a 2021 interview, Mulhern made a bold statement about the show’s quality, saying: “I believe this is, and I genuinely believe this—not going against the other shows that I present, Catchphrase and In for a Penny—but this is the best game show on TV.”

Naturally, this raised comparisons with another ITV favorite, Tipping Point, hosted by Ben Shephard. When asked whether a rivalry existed between the two shows, Mulhern didn’t hesitate to throw in a cheeky remark. “Well no, because Rolling In It is the best. This is better than Tipping Point,” he quipped.

A Friendly Competition

Mulhern didn’t stop there, further adding, “Don’t worry about that. We might have a rivalry now because Ben might text me and say, ‘What did you say that for?’ I think Tipping Point is an amazing show, but Rolling In It is better.”

Despite his playful jabs, Mulhern and Shephard are known to have a great friendship. Fans understood that Mulhern’s comments were made in jest, reflecting his signature humor rather than any genuine competition between the two presenters.

Stephen Mulhern’s Ever-Expanding Career

Mulhern has remained a staple of British television for decades, continuously adding more hosting roles to his already impressive résumé. Alongside his work on Dancing on Ice and Deal or No Deal, he took on another classic game show in 2023, hosting ITV’s You Bet! revival alongside Holly Willoughby.

Originally airing between 1988 and 1997, You Bet! was a popular challenge-based show hosted by several TV legends, including the late Sir Bruce Forsyth. In August 2024, ITV announced a revival, featuring two special episodes with Mulhern and Willoughby at the helm.

A Future of Entertainment

With Mulhern’s undeniable charisma and enthusiasm for game shows, it’s no surprise that he remains a top choice for ITV’s biggest entertainment programs. His ability to connect with audiences, deliver humor, and inject excitement into his hosting duties has solidified his place in the world of television.

As for his so-called rivalry with Shephard? It’s safe to say that it’s all in good fun. Both presenters continue to entertain audiences with their respective shows, and their friendly banter only adds to the charm of British television.

Whether he’s rolling coins on Rolling In It, spinning the Catchphrase wheel, or bringing back classic game shows, Stephen Mulhern’s infectious energy ensures that he remains a fan favorite for years to come.
