The first match after the retirement announcement of ‘Wimbledon 2021 champion’ Ash Barty disappointed fans: ‘She is past her prime’

Ash Barty has announced she will be returning to the court at Wimbledon in 2024 to play the Invitational Doubles.

It is the first time the 2021 Wimbledon champion will be taking her racquet into competition since her shock retirement from professional tennis in March 2022.

The invitational doubles are a friendly round-robin of retired professional players.

Ms Barty’s return was announced in a joint post with Wimbledon on Instagram,

with the tennis tournament saying they were “delighted” to have their former champion returning to the court.

It has not been confirmed who will be Ms Barty’s partner for the game.

Ms Barty has remained adamant she would not be returning to professional tennis.

Since retiring, she has opened the Ash Barty Foundation, which aims to help inspire young people to succeed using sport and education.

She announced her marriage to partner Gary Kissick in 2022 and the two welcomed son Hayden in July 2023.

In July this year, it was announced Ms Barty would be returning to Wimbledon as a commentator for the BBC.
