The Genesis Invitational has taken over the Riviera Country Club from February 10 to 16, attracting the best golfers from around the world.
Since putting his name behind the tournament in 2016, Tiger Woods has not only elevated the status of the Genesis Invitational,
but used it as an opportunity to give back with the Tiger Woods Foundation.
“I never thought that golf would come back around and be such a big part of my college career,” says Carla Mosquera.
Mosquera is a freshman at nearby University of California Los Angeles. She is a first-generation college and American born student.
She remembers the day she learned she was receiving a scholarship from the Tiger Woods Foundation.
“It’s kind of hard when your family doesn’t know how to help you navigate through this. Because it’s foreign to them,” said Mosquera.
Mosquera was one of five Earl Woods Scholars from the greater Los Angeles area, but the scholarship money is only part of a larger initiative by Tiger’s Foundation. The goal is to increase academic resources for underrepresented students, from education programs worldwide to the Learning Lab in Anaheim.
“He has done so much for the game of golf and he has also done so much for people like me,” says Mosquera.
