“We wish Kate well and hope she can heal in peace and privacy,” the couple said in a statement, as reported by People on March 22.
Prince Harry, 39, and Meghan Markle, 42, stepped out with Kate Middleton and Prince William for the last time in Windsor following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September 2022.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were in Europe for a series of events when Queen Elizabeth died at the age of 96. The couple traveled from California,
where they moved after stepping back from their royal duties in 2020, to attend the funeral.
On March 22, the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, released a video message to share that after her abdominal surgery in January 2024, post-operative tests “revealed cancer.”
The Princess of Wales explained that she was in the “early stages” of chemotherapy but did not say what type of cancer she had.
She and Prince William took time to explain the situation to their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, before making the announcement.
A source told People that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were unaware of Kate’s abdominal surgery and recovery.
“They knew everything that was going on in the UK but had no details about Kate’s health. It’s clear they don’t have the confidence of the royal family,” the source said.
While the Duke of Sussex traveled from California to the UK in February 2023 following the announcement of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis, his brief stay in the UK did not involve meeting his brother, Prince William, or sister-in-law, Princess Kate.
A royal source said at the time that “there were no plans for the brothers to meet.” Queen Camilla was present for a brief reunion between Prince Harry and King Charles at Clarence House on February 6.
A former courtier said that “Prince William’s main concern was his wife” in the weeks after his surgery. William’s trust in Harry may have been shaken after the release of his memoir Spare and the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan.
“It’s normal to go and see your sister-in-law who is having a serious operation, as well as your niece and nephew. But it’s not normal. It’s terribly sad,” a source close to the royal family said.
“This is all about William’s desire to protect the monarchy, which he feels he can’t trust Prince Harry with. I don’t think William will agree to take Harry back into the royal family unless he apologises,” historian Robert Lacey told People.
