The One Show’s Alex Jones breaks down live on-air as she says ‘I can’t even say it’

Alex Jones, the beloved presenter of The One Show, found herself overwhelmed

with emotion during Tuesday’s episode (March 11) as she struggled to hold back tears while discussing a heartfelt topic.

Joined by documentary maker and broadcaster Stacey Dooley, Alex became visibly emotional

when talking about Stacey’s latest book, Conversations with Remarkable Mothers.

The conversation took a deeply moving turn when Alex attempted to discuss one of the book’s most touching elements—a letter Stacey penned to her own daughter, Minnie.

As she tried to put her thoughts into words, Alex found herself choked up, exclaiming, “I can’t even say it,” while fighting back tears.

A Powerful Discussion on Motherhood

Stacey Dooley appeared on The One Show to promote her new book, which is set to be released later this week. Known for her compassionate storytelling and investigative journalism, Stacey’s latest work delves into the lives of mothers from various walks of life, giving an intimate look into their unique experiences.

The book consists of a series of heartfelt letters written by mothers to their children, providing insight into the joys, struggles, and emotions that come with motherhood. Kicking off the collection is Stacey’s own personal letter to Minnie, which particularly struck a chord with Alex.

Expressing her feelings, Alex said, “It is lovely, and there’s the whole spectrum of motherhood from every angle, but, of course, it starts with a letter to Minnie. Oh my god, I can’t even say it, but it’s just so lovely.” Her co-host, Clara Amfo, was quick to offer comfort as Alex attempted to compose herself.

A Candid and Lighthearted Exchange

While the discussion had its emotional moments, there were also lighter elements that brought laughter to the studio. Alex pointed out that Stacey’s book wasn’t just sentimental—it had its humorous moments as well.

“It’s quite funny as well, actually, because you talk about finding out you were pregnant and, of course, it was in Selfridges,” Alex remarked with a smile, referencing a personal anecdote shared in the book.

Stacey, known for her down-to-earth personality, chuckled along and shared more about her journey in writing the book.

“We were sort of flirting with the idea of what we wanted to talk about, and whether I had a third book in me. I did definitely want to do another book,” Stacey explained.

Choosing Motherhood as the Central Theme

Reflecting on why she chose motherhood as the focus of her new book, Stacey admitted that the subject felt like an obvious choice given her current stage in life.

“It was sort of a no-brainer if you know what I mean. Motherhood was at the forefront of my mind… I just quite fancied doing something surrounding motherhood,” she revealed.

Despite the abundance of parenting books on the market, Stacey wanted to take a different approach. She acknowledged that there were already plenty of books offering advice on how to be a good parent, but she didn’t see herself as someone with the authority to provide that kind of guidance.

“It’s such an oversaturated market, there are so many books telling you how to do it, and I don’t know how to do it,” she admitted with a laugh. “So I thought, ‘Do you know what? I actually have no authority to hand out any words of advice.’”

Capturing a Variety of Motherhood Stories

Instead of offering parenting tips, Stacey decided to engage with other mothers from different backgrounds to capture a broader perspective on motherhood.

“I wanted to have conversations with mothers from all walks of life—mothers from different backgrounds, different life scenarios, and different experiences,” she explained.

By collecting these personal stories, Stacey aimed to create a book that celebrated the diversity of motherhood while offering comfort and relatability to readers.

An Emotional and Uplifting Moment

Alex Jones’ emotional reaction to Stacey’s book highlighted just how impactful and touching the collection of letters truly is. Viewers watching The One Show saw firsthand how deeply the stories resonated, not just with Alex but with many who may have experienced similar emotions in their own journeys as parents.

The touching exchange between Alex and Stacey served as a reminder of the powerful connections that motherhood fosters—ones filled with love, laughter, challenges, and unforgettable moments.
