The PGA made a special announcement concerning may be the tour’s best player of all time Tiger Woods.
The PGA announced that the 15-time major champion will now have a lifetime exemption status for certain PGA events.
Its ‘Sponsor Exemption for Lifetime Achievement’ will allow players with 80 or more PGA Tour victories to qualify for ‘Signature Events.’
Woods is the only current player who falls into this category, with 82 career victories. He’s tied for the most ever PGA Tour victories with PGA legend Sam Snead.
The PGA Tour said it implemented this new rule in order to “recognize Tiger Woods in his own category.”
Those eight signature events include The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
The Genesis Invitational – a tournament which Woods has hosted in recent years – the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, The Memorial Tournament, and the Travelers Championship.
Despite his recent struggles, Woods is still the tour’s biggest star. He drew a lot of attention last week while playing at the U.S. Open. He briefly led the tournament early on but eventually didn’t make the cut.
Maybe these exemptions will allow Woods to play in more tournaments in the future since as of now, Woods has mostly been playing in just the majors. Since his car accident a few years ago, Woods has struggled of late.
