Her absence doesn’t come as a surprise
It’s been eight years since we last saw Beyoncé grace the carpeted steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for fashion’s biggest night—and now we’ll have to wait for yet another year to see if she’ll ever return.
Beyoncé has officially skipped out on the 2024 Met Gala, despite fans’ hopes that she would make a comeback this year, given the highly publicized rollout of her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, which dropped in March.
To promote the record, the superstar made several surprise appearances at other events, from sitting on the sidelines at the Super Bowl in February to participating in a meet-and-greet in Tokyo the following month.
Despite her banner year of success, Beyoncé’s absence is perhaps unsurprising, given her nearly decade-long hiatus from the annual event. Indeed, she hasn’t attended the Met Gala since 2016, which marked her seventh appearance at the prestigious party.
At the time, she honored the year’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” theme in a beaded latex gown by Givenchy.
The showstopping piece featured a subtle trumpet silhouette, as well as large Victorian-esque puffed sleeves.
Despite her decision to once again miss out on this year’s festivities, fans can still look forward to more high-fashion looks from Beyoncé, as evidenced from her recent tendency to share outfit photo dumps on Instagram.
In particular, the singer has been putting a western spin on her wardrobe, often accenting her latest ensembles with accessories like a cowboy hat or a bolo tie, a nod to her Texan roots and to country music project Cowboy Carter.
“This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” Beyoncé reflected in an Instagram post in March.
“But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.
It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history.”
