Now, neither Woods nor tournament organisers have confirmed the 82-time PGA Tour winner’s commitment between June 6 and 9, but a hint on X (formerly Twitter), was enough to light the fuse.

The Wells Fargo Championship replied with the same emoji, whilst curious fans posted “TIGER PLEASE”, “No way… please be Tiger” and “TW”.

The tournament was first played in 1976 and is now a ‘Signature Event’ in the PGA Tour calendar, which means Woods is not eligible to compete without an exemption.

He also used it as a returning stage in 2020 after missing three months between the Genesis Invitational and the Memorial Tournament.
