Renowned music producer Stevie J has come forward in defense of embattled rapper and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, despite the mounting controversies surrounding him.

Stevie J, who has a long history of collaboration with Combs,
recently spoke out about the shocking surveillance footage that captured Combs assaulting his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura.
While acknowledging the disturbing nature of the incident, he offered an explanation for Combs’ behavior, attributing it to personal struggles and substance abuse.

Stevie J Praises Diddy’s Influence on His Career

During an interview with DJ Vlad, Stevie J expressed unwavering loyalty to Combs, crediting him with a major role in his early success in the music industry.

According to the producer, Combs was instrumental in helping him establish himself, even handing him over $6,000 in cash at the beginning of his career.
“Thanks to one guy, Sean Combs, Diddy. When I came into the equation, he was hot, I just was the kerosene. I was the gasoline and the kerosene, and me showing him that I could make a hit,” Stevie J said, reminiscing about their collaborations.
The two have worked together on numerous projects, including Combs’ highly successful 1997 album No Way Out. However, their strong professional ties did not prevent Stevie J from being deeply affected by the recently surfaced video of Combs assaulting Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel corridor.
Shock Over Assault Footage
Stevie J admitted that seeing the video, which depicted Combs chasing Ventura down a hallway, grabbing her by the back of the head, and violently slamming her to the ground, left him shaken.
“It really threw me for a loop… I always think about and talk about things I know to be true about Sean Combs. After I saw the video, I went and saw him in Miami and we had a conversation. And I let him know how affected I was by that. I didn’t know he had that in him to do that.”

Despite his distress over the footage, Stevie J offered an explanation for Combs’ behavior, suggesting that the music mogul was in a self-destructive phase at the time.
Blaming a ‘Dark Place’ and Substance Abuse
Stevie J claimed that Combs’ actions were influenced by heavy drug use and a troubled state of mind.
“I just know that he was in a dark place in his life, as he described to me. He was just doing a lot of drugs and it was just dark for him,” he stated.
While Combs has publicly apologized for the 2016 attack on Ventura, calling it “disgusting” and admitting that he sought professional help, the scandal continues to cast a shadow over his legacy.
Legal Troubles Mount for Combs
Currently, Combs is being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, facing multiple federal charges unrelated to the Ventura incident. Authorities have accused him of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, fraud, and coercion. Since his arrest, additional lawsuits have emerged, including allegations from a male escort who claims Combs sexually assaulted and threatened him.

Despite multiple attempts to secure bail, Combs remains incarcerated. His legal team has denied all allegations, and his trial is set to begin in May 2025.
A Tarnished Legacy
Once one of the most powerful figures in the music industry, Combs’ reputation has suffered irreparable damage in recent months. The Ventura lawsuit, which was initially filed for $30 million, was swiftly settled, but the public release of the assault footage reignited backlash against him.
In the video, Combs, dressed in only a towel, can be seen chasing Ventura down a hotel hallway before grabbing and attacking her. In response to the viral footage, he issued a public apology, saying, “I was disgusted when I did it. I’m disgusted now. I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry.”

However, for many, the apology was not enough to erase the impact of the footage, nor to explain the numerous allegations that have since surfaced.
Stevie J Stands By His Friend
While the music industry and the public continue to grapple with the allegations against Combs, Stevie J remains one of the few who openly express support for him. Despite acknowledging the severity of the incident, the producer maintains that Combs was in a deeply troubled state at the time.
“He’s still my brother,” Stevie J stated. “I just pray for him.”
As Combs prepares for his upcoming trial, the extent of his legal troubles remains uncertain. Regardless of the outcome, his once-unshakable status in the entertainment world has been permanently altered. Whether he will find redemption or face a downfall that leaves him disgraced remains to be seen.
