The coming of age story follows a shy teen called Charlie, who finds himself as a bit of a loner when he starts school.
However, with the help of his two new friends Patrick and Sam he finally learns that not fitting in is cooler than following the crowd.
Watson’s character is world’s away from boffin Hermione, with Sam not seeming to take school, or life, too seriously – as one shot with the actress dancing in a corset shows.
And Sam is evidently far less stuffy than Hermione, with Patrick referring to her as a ‘slut’ halfway through the trailer.
Another scene sees Emma standing up in the back of a truck and feeling the wind in her hair.
Later, she tells Charlie at a rowdy party: ‘Welcome to the island of misfit toys’.
The Harry Potter star’s American accent is almost faultless, and it’ll be interesting to see if she can play a laidback high school teenager as convincingly as she played Potter’s best mate.
The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, adapted from Stephen Chbosky’s book of the same name, also stars Paul Rudd, Ezra Miller (of We Need To Talk About Kevin fame) and Logan Lerman.
While a UK release date is yet to be announced, the film is out in the US September 14.
