Robin Roberts, the beloved Good Morning America host, recently shared insights into her private life with her wife, Amber Laign, 

revealing why the couple chooses to live in separate homes despite their long-lasting and close relationship. 

During a segment on Good Morning America on January 22, the 64-year-old journalist opened up about the unconventional living arrangement, 

explaining that it wasn’t a choice they made, but rather a result of their demanding work schedules.

“It’s not for everyone,” Robin admitted, acknowledging that living apart isn’t an ideal situation. 

However, she emphasized the trust that exists between her and Amber, saying, “Amber and I [live separately], not by choice, but because of the work schedule. 

But there’s a lot of trust there. And there are some people from my past I would not have done this with.”

Robin, who hosts Good Morning America from the early hours of the morning, lives in a luxurious $2.5 million apartment in Manhattan, offering her easy access to the network’s studios. In contrast, Amber, 50, owns a property on the Upper West Side of New York City, just a short 10-minute drive from Robin’s apartment. Despite the physical distance, Robin insists that their bond remains strong and that the separation works due to their mutual trust.

Additionally, Robin owns a beautiful 0.92-acre mansion in Farmington, Connecticut, which serves as their getaway home. It was in this Connecticut home that Robin and Amber legally tied the knot in 2023, after being in a relationship for 18 years. Robin typically spends her weekdays at her Manhattan apartment, while Amber remains in their Connecticut retreat. Their relationship, however, was significantly affected when the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to spend more time together in 2020.

In an interview with People in April 2021, Robin reflected on how their relationship had grown during that time. “We spent more time together this year than in the previous 15 years combined. We’ve never been stronger!” she shared. The pandemic allowed them to reconnect in a meaningful way as they quarantined in Connecticut, a period that strengthened their bond. Robin humorously added that packing patience for the extended time together was essential to navigating the unprecedented changes brought on by the pandemic.

Robin and Amber’s journey as a couple began back in 2005, when they met on a blind date. Their relationship remained private until 2013, when Robin publicly came out as a lesbian via a Facebook post, marking a significant moment in both her personal life and her public persona.

Throughout their years together, the couple has been incredibly supportive of each other, particularly through health challenges. Robin, a breast cancer survivor, was by Amber’s side when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. In an Instagram video, Robin expressed her commitment to being there for Amber during her treatment. “She and I have been together almost 17 years and have helped each other through our challenges like my journey with cancer,” Robin said at the time. “It’s my turn now to be there for her like she was for me.”

Amber successfully completed her radiation treatment in July 2022, and the couple soon began planning their wedding. The long-awaited ceremony took place in 2023, surrounded by their close friends and family. Reflecting on the journey to marriage, Robin said, “We’re getting married this year. It was something we had talked about, but we had put it off. She became ill, but… it is saying yes to that, and that next chapter.”

Their engagement was just as unconventional as their relationship. Robin described the moment they decided to marry: “It was just us hanging out in our little hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot and putting calamari rings on each other and saying, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do it.’” This casual and heartfelt moment reflected their laid-back approach to commitment and the deep connection they share.
