Al Roker Won’t ‘Judge Anybody’ Who Uses Ozempic for Weight Loss: ‘Unlike Any Other Addiction’

Al Roker has long been open about his struggles with weight loss, and now he’s weighing in on the rising popularity of weight loss drugs like Ozempic.

The former Today show weatherman, 70, recently shared his perspective, emphasizing that he won’t judge anyone who turns to medication for help in their weight loss journey.

Roker’s Thoughts on Ozempic and Weight Loss Struggles

Speaking with the Daily Mail, Roker explained that he understands why some people rely on medications such as Ozempic to manage their weight.

He pointed out that food addiction is different from other dependencies because people can’t simply eliminate food from their lives the way they can with other substances.

“I’m not gonna judge anybody,” Roker said. “Listen, it’s unlike any other addiction or dependence.”

Unlike alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs, food is essential for survival, which makes it particularly difficult for those struggling with weight issues. Roker acknowledged this reality and expressed support for those who choose weight loss medication as a tool to regain control of their health.

“If this is what works for them, I mean, who are we to say, ‘Oh, don’t do that,’” he continued. “As long as it’s safe and effective, good for you. I think everybody’s journey is their journey.”

His Own Weight Loss Journey

Roker’s understanding of weight struggles comes from personal experience. After years of unsuccessful dieting, he made the life-changing decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery in 2002 in an effort to lose 100 pounds. At his heaviest, Roker weighed 340 pounds and wore size 54 jeans.

Initially, he kept his weight loss procedure a secret from his Today show colleagues. However, when he returned to television with a dramatically slimmer frame, it became clear that he had taken significant steps to improve his health.

Reflecting on his transformation, Roker credited learning portion control as a crucial part of his ongoing success. “I guess what I’ve come to [realize with] my relationship with food, which has happened over a period of time, is that I’ve learned about portions,” he shared.

A Deathbed Promise That Changed Everything

While Roker’s weight loss journey was driven by many factors, one pivotal moment stands out—the promise he made to his late father. As his father lay dying, Roker vowed to get his health under control. The weight of that promise pushed him to finally take decisive action.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever had to make a deathbed promise to someone you love, but if you have, you know the kind of guilt and massive responsibility I felt in that moment,” he wrote in his memoir.

This emotional commitment motivated him to follow through with the gastric bypass surgery and make lasting lifestyle changes.

Marking 20 Years Since His Surgery

In March 2022, Roker celebrated two decades since his gastric bypass surgery by posting a reflective message on Instagram. Alongside a photo of himself holding up his old size 54 jeans, he wrote:

“Hard to believe it was 20 years ago today, I wore these size 54 Levi jeans to my #gastricbypass at 340 lbs and here I am today. It’s still a struggle but I’m never going back. I have setbacks and struggle every day, but I never forget how far I’ve come.”

His words highlighted both the challenges and triumphs of his journey, serving as an inspiration to others facing similar battles with their weight.

A Supportive Outlook on Weight Loss Solutions

Roker recognizes that weight loss is a deeply personal and complex issue. Whether someone chooses surgery, medication, or lifestyle changes, he believes that people should do what works best for them without fear of judgment.

His perspective on Ozempic and other weight loss drugs reflects this open-minded approach. While he took a different path by opting for surgery, he respects that every individual has their own struggles and solutions.

As he continues to share his experiences, Roker remains an advocate for health and well-being, reminding people that no matter the method, the most important thing is finding a sustainable way to live a healthier life.
