Craig Melvin experienced an emotional moment during his first day co-anchoring Today, as his parents, Betty and Lawrence Melvin, 

made a surprise appearance to express their pride and support. 

The 45-year-old journalist officially stepped into his new role alongside longtime host Savannah Guthrie, taking over the position previously held by Hoda Kotb.

A Tearful Surprise from Family

Monday’s broadcast of Today was a particularly special one for Melvin, as his parents joined him on air, leading to a heartfelt and emotional exchange. 

His mother, Betty, shared her excitement and pride, expressing confidence in her son’s abilities. 

“I have butterflies in my stomach today,” she admitted, adding that she always believed in her son’s potential.

Betty emphasized how she had always encouraged Craig to strive for greatness and never settle for less than his best. “I have always encouraged him to do what he can do, you know, high expectations. You are not going to disappoint anybody,” she said. She concluded by affirming his worthiness of the role, stating, “He has proven to me and everybody else that he has done his very best – and he deserves this. We love you.”

Craig’s father, Lawrence, also took a moment to reflect on his son’s journey. He recalled how, despite working overnight shifts, Craig would eagerly greet him after school to share stories. “He would come home from school. I worked third shift. And he would always say, ‘Dad, let me tell you something.’ And I would say, ‘Dad needs to get some rest.’” However, he fondly remembered how Craig’s enthusiasm never wavered. “But he just kept going and going.”

Overcome with emotion, Craig fought back tears as he looked at his parents, acknowledging their sacrifices and unwavering support. Turning to Savannah Guthrie, he admitted, “I [wouldn’t be] sitting on this couch with you if it weren’t for those two.”

A Family’s Inspiring Journey

Melvin’s path to success has been shaped by a family history of resilience and perseverance. After being announced as Hoda Kotb’s successor in November, he opened up about the struggles his family had faced.

He revealed that his father was born in prison and overcame significant challenges, including addiction, to become one of Craig’s biggest inspirations. “My dad was born in prison, but that didn’t define him. He overcame addictions in his life and he’s become one of my favorite human beings,” he shared, his voice breaking slightly.

Craig also spoke about his mother’s sacrifices, explaining how she took on a second job to provide for their family. “My mother’s mother was an elementary school custodian, and my father’s mother had to take care of five kids, so she ran numbers and ran liquor for a long time and ended up in prison,” he recounted.

Through it all, his parents worked tirelessly to build a better future for their children, and Craig expressed his gratitude for everything they had done. “I’m thankful that they’re still young enough and healthy enough to be able to see this and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” he said, visibly emotional.

A Heartwarming Moment with His Wife and Children

Craig’s first day was made even more special with a surprise visit from his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and their two children, Delano, 10, and Sybil, 8. Lindsay shared a heartfelt message, comparing his new role to a championship moment in sports.

“To me, it symbolizes belief because you [Craig] dared to dream a dream and then to see it actually come true. It makes me think about someone making it, a spouse making it to the Super Bowl or the game-winning catch. That’s what this feels like,” she expressed.

She also took a moment to praise her husband’s character, highlighting the qualities that make him not just a great broadcaster but also a great person. “What makes me so proud is just the person that Melvin is and understanding that it is the kindness and how genuine he is,” she said.

With his family by his side and his parents’ unwavering support, Craig Melvin’s first day on Today was a momentous occasion filled with love, gratitude, and a deep sense of accomplishment.
