Let’s face it, Emma Watson is known for being a badass feminist ambassador.

So it’s no surprise that the Harry Potter star has made history after winning the first gender-neutral prize at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Beating the likes of Hugh Jackman and James McAvoy on Sunday night (May 7).

The 27-year-old was presented with the genderless gong by Asia Kate Dillon, who plays Taylor in Billions – TV’s first ever gender non-binary character.

Accepting the award in another empowering speech.

Emma said: “The first acting award that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience.

“MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone.

“But to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories,

“Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits. This is very meaningful to me.”

This is the first time both men and women have been up for the same award in the show’s history, but the MTV Movie & TV Awards isn’t the first event to introduce gender-neutral categories – the Grammy Awards scrapped male and female prizes back in 2011.

It comes after Emma insisted her Belle in Disney’s new live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast isn’t actually a Disney princess.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Emma revealed: “Actually Belle isn’t a Disney princess.

“She’s one of the only princesses that isn’t actually a princess. I think she was meant to be a departure from the Disney princesses that had come before.

“Belle was meant to break the mould. So I felt very connected to her.”

She continued: “Belle is relatable – she’s trying to move beyond the expectations that people have for her.

“Everyone certainly thinks that marrying Gaston would be the most wonderful happy ending possible for her but she wants more for herself, which goes against the grain and the status quo and that’s not easy to do.”
