Savannah Guthrie jokes with Tom Hanks on Today show after controversial SNL sketch

Tom Hanks, the beloved Hollywood veteran, recently appeared on The Today Show to discuss his latest project, The Americas, a nature docuseries he narrates.

However, his appearance came amid controversy, as the actor faced backlash from right-wing supporters over a recent Saturday Night Live skit.

During his conversation with Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, Hanks showcased his signature charm and enthusiasm,

shifting the focus from the heated online debate to his passion for storytelling—this time through the lens of the natural world.

Tom Hanks Faces Political Controversy

At 68, Hanks remains one of Hollywood’s most respected figures, but his recent SNL skit landed him in hot water with MAGA supporters.

The skit, which aired last week, saw Hanks portraying a Trump supporter in a comedic, yet controversial light. Donning a red MAGA hat, his character refused to shake hands with a Black man, a moment that sparked intense debate online.

Right-wing critics swiftly took to social media, calling the segment “racist” and “offensive.” Many accused Hanks of mocking Trump supporters and fueling political division. Despite the backlash, the Forrest Gump actor has remained quiet on the controversy, choosing instead to move forward with his latest project.

Hanks and Guthrie’s Playful Exchange

On Wednesday, February 19, Hanks joined Savannah Guthrie on The Today Show to discuss The Americas, the highly anticipated docuseries exploring the extraordinary wildlife of North and South America.

Their conversation kicked off with a lighthearted moment, as Guthrie joked, “Are you tired of me?”

Hanks, ever the charismatic guest, responded playfully: “What’s with this! It’s like, oh wow, I get to go to algebra, and Savannah’s in my algebra class.”

Guthrie, amused, quipped back, “And sitting with Tom Hanks is always a Master Class—you never know what you might learn.”

A Passion for Storytelling in ‘The Americas’

As the interview continued, Guthrie introduced Hanks’ new project, emphasizing the significance of his role as the narrator. The docuseries showcases breathtaking visuals of North and South American wildlife, promising to captivate audiences with stunning natural wonders.

Hanks, clearly enthusiastic, expressed his awe at the production’s authenticity.

“There are times where I cannot believe what I am looking at,” he said. “There is not a moment of artificiality in it. Nothing has been CGI’d.”

His admiration for the project was evident, as he marveled at the untouched beauty of nature and the incredible cinematography featured in the series.

Hanks Impresses with Fun Facts

Guthrie then asked Hanks if working on the series had made him a walking encyclopedia of nature facts.

“So are you full of facts now?” she teased.

Hanks, never one to miss an opportunity for humor, confidently responded, “Oh, I’m the greatest dinner companion there can possibly be.”

He then shared one of the most fascinating discoveries he made while working on the documentary:

“This is the first time I heard about the Atmospheric River—it’s a body of water that lives above us and travels for thousands and thousands of miles.”

Fans Show Excitement for ‘The Americas’

As news of the docuseries spread, fans took to social media to express their excitement. On Reddit, discussions about The Americas quickly gained traction, with many praising Hanks’ voice and storytelling abilities.

“I really enjoy Tom Hanks’ narration voice, that should be nice to watch,” one user commented.

Another added, “Love this idea and he is an excellent narrator! Knowledge is awesome!”

A third fan chimed in, “Looks very interesting, and who doesn’t love Tom Hanks?”

Another admirer simply put it, “Gotta admit, he’s a great hype man.”

Despite the political controversy surrounding him, it’s clear that Hanks remains a fan favorite. His ability to engage audiences, whether through acting or narration, continues to earn him admiration across generations.

A Legacy Unshaken

While his SNL skit may have ruffled some feathers, Tom Hanks remains focused on his work. The Americas is shaping up to be a must-watch for nature lovers, and Hanks’ role as narrator only adds to the anticipation.

As he continues to navigate both praise and criticism, one thing is certain—whether on the big screen, the small screen, or through voiceovers, Tom Hanks knows how to tell a story.
