Emma Watson made a bold creative choice while filming Harry Potter kissing scenes with Daniel Radcliffe.

But the films didn’t just make bank at the box office; they also fashioned lifelong bonds between cast members Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint. 

The famous trio got on so well while filming the iconic films, they started to think of each other more as siblings than coworkers.

Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint practically grew up on the Harry Potter set. Having landed their roles at very tender ages, the famous trio had plenty of time to become well-acquainted with each other and forge lifelong bonds.

By the time the iconic franchise was drawing to a close, the three had grown so close that they’d started to think of each other more as siblings than co-stars.

Although teenage crushes weren’t uncommon on the Harry Potter set, as evidenced by Watson’s self-confessed crush on Tom Felton, there wasn’t even a hint of romance between the famous trio. In fact, when the script called for a passionate kiss between Hermione and Ron, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson found it nearly impossible to keep straight faces.

“It was meant to be this dramatic make out, but [Rupert] and I just kept corpsing and just kept laughing,” Watson shared during her appearance on HBO’s 2022 reunion special, Return to Hogwarts. “I was really scared we were never going to get it because we just couldn’t take it seriously.”

Things didn’t pan out any better when it was Hermione and Harry’s turn to share a passionate moment. “It was the weirdest thing ever, and they only told us about the silver body paint the day before,” Watson said of the kiss in a 2010 interview with JoBlo.

“They were like, ‘Oh, and P.S., we hope you don’t mind but we’d like you both to be topless and covered in silver paint.’ I was like, ‘Ookay,’ if it wasn’t weird enough before. So yeah, it was bizarre.”

Daniel Radcliffe Made Some Awkward Comments About His Kissing Scene With Emma Watson

As if the half-naked make-out scene wasn’t steamy enough, Emma Watson decided to make a bold creative choice that caught Radcliffe completely off guard.

“I think for the scene, it obviously had to be something that would really disturb Ron, that would make him really jealous and upset,” the Noah star shared in a 2010 interview, “so I think the kiss had to be passionate from Hermione’s end.”

Evidently stupefied, Radcliffe couldn’t resist raving about the intimate scene in interviews. “I was ambushed! It was full on,” he shared with Daybreak. “It was incredible, I was not expecting that. I always thought it was going to be this soft sensual sort of moment and suddenly there was this vigorous kissing happening to me.”

Per the Miracle Workers star, the scene got so intense, Rupert Grint had to be kicked off set for laughing too hard. “Rupert actually had to leave set because he was laughing at us that much,” he said. “I could see him out of the corner of my eye, his eyes just watering.”

Though caught off-guard by Watson’s alleged ferociousness, Radcliffe went on to clarify that he by no means found the kiss lacking. “She is a bit of an animal, she is, she was great,” he said. “But then I’m not complaining, there are tens of thousands of men that would cut off limbs to be in that position.”

At the time of his Daybreak interview, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows had yet to grace the big screen, and fans were clamoring for details on what to expect when it finally did. As such, Radcliffe’s comments ended up garnering significant media attention, which left Emma Watson fielding a barrage of questions about why she practically pounced on him during their kissing scene.

“He calls me a firey kisser or so I hear. Journalists keep bringing this up with me and I don’t really know what to say,” Watson said in a 2010 interview.

To her credit, Watson handled the unending inquiries with grace, repeatedly explaining her creative choice. “I guess I was just so worried about it coming across as awkward as I felt it was inside that I just wanted to make it as real as I could?,” she explained to JoBlo. “So I guess I just went for it?”

However, the Noah star eventually confronted Radcliffe about his comments, begging to know why he’d so unabashedly called her an “animal” in an interview.

“Well, I said to him last night, I was like, ‘You’ve been telling everyone I pounced on you!’” she recalled in a 2010 interview. “He’s like, ‘I didn’t use those words. I didn’t use those words. I just said…’ I was like, ‘Whatever, Dan.’ He’s said, ‘No, no! I gave you 10 out of 10 for kissing.’ I was like, ‘All right, as long as it’s positive, I guess it’s fine.’”
